What it looks like

Control » Close control

How?

Close control means keeping the ball firmly under control and close to your body, usually when dribbling but also when controlling the first touch of the ball. It relates to the use of all parts of the footballer’s body: feet, thighs, knees, chest, shoulders, head.

Why?

“Close control is important in matches as it enables you to keep possession. If your first touch is poor, the other team will have a chance to regain possession and break down your attack. It also creates space and allows you to beat defenders. ”

Tips & drills

Try slaloming around cones or obstacles as seen in the video. Start slowly then increase your speed. Once you’ve mastered that, try introducing an opponent, jockeying in front of you.
