Hammers win top of the table clash
Sunday 27th November 2011
by Dave Maslen
Leigh ramblers 0 – 2 West Ham
West ham ladies went into their top of the table clash with Leigh ramblers today and showed great team work and determination in defeating the Ramblers and breaking the southend sides eighteen month unbeaten run.
West ham defended well from the start and managed to hold off early pressure from the Ramblers, hitting them on the counter attack with great work from Shellie Sumpter out wide who took advantage of a well cleared ball from charlotte Blaize that sent her on a run that she finished with a fantastic long range shot that flew over the ramblers keeper hitting the top right hand corner of the net, with this came more ramblers pressure but a good defensive display and great goal keeping from Daniela Charles ensured the hammers a one nil half time lead.
The second half saw a more attacking formation take to the field taking full advantage of the sloping pitch, with long spells of pressure coming from the hammers it eventually paid off after Kacie Winsor Claydon gave her all to chase and win the ball from a retreating ramblers defender and play the ball back across goal for Klesha Darroux to slot the ball home from close range.
The Ramblers threw everything at the hammers for the last ten minutes but a very determined West Ham ladies side held firm and came out victories putting themselves five points clear at the top of the league.
